Islamic day was first celebrated in the late fifties or early sixties in the Maldives. Today "this day" has penetrated the consciousness of Maldivians more than before, maybe because our Government has taken the opportunity to mark the day with different programs to demonstrate how much more “Islam friendly” they are in comparison to the 30- year regime.Centuries ago our forefathers accepted Islam, and today many of us like to boast; an increasingly contested statistic that we are 100% Muslims. Whatever the truth may or may not be, it’s an incontestable fact that Maldivians by and large have enjoyed historically (recent, at least) homogeneity with respect to their belief system. How much this homogeneity engendered brotherly love and harmony between the sons and daughters of this country, I leave for you to ponder.
By the Grace of Allah we have been fairly consistent in our acceptance of the Oneness of Allah and the acceptance of the Holy Prophet as Allah’s slave and Messenger. I dare say until recently the ordinary Maldivian had no difficulty in accepting the supremacy of the Shariah with regard to his day to day life. Thus I put it to you the reader that the Shariah was not given its due place in our lives mainly due to the failings of our leaders and even more importantly the failings of our scholars & elite.
It is in this light that we have to face facts and take stock of the present situation that we are faced in. On the one hand, in our day to day lives we consiously or unconsiously completely deny any preponderance or supremacy of the Shariah in our lives and on the other hand we consciously and actively give value and preference to a system of life that goes against the grain, letter and soul of the Shariah. We are now spending more and more time, wealth and all our energies in divisive politics and letting the strongest, richest, loudest and meanest amongst us to wedge hatred and ill feelings amongst us.
So in the many gatherings, celebrations, lectures in forums, TV and radios we are marking this day with unusually robust fashion. Alhamdulilahi! I wonder how many of you would stop and think that centuries ago our ancestors accepted by Allah’s Grace Islam as taught by Allah’s own prophet – who underwent insult upon insult, trauma upon trauma and pain upon pain to pass the Message of Islam entrusted on him by Allah in all it's pristine purity.
I invite you to make the firm resolution today that Insha Allah we are going to strive to uphold the attestation that THERE IS NO GOD BUT ALLAH & THAT PROPHET MUHAMMAD IS HIS MESSENGER. Brothers & Sisters, the “mighty oak tree” was once only a seed. Together Insha Allah we can strive to reclaim our lives, our ethos, our being for ALLAH & ONLY ALLAH.

And hold fast, all together, by the rope which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves; and remember with gratitude Allah's favour on you; for ye were enemies and He joined your hearts in love, so that by His Grace, ye became brethren; and ye were on the brink of the pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Abu Musa reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “The similitude of mine and the message I have been sent with is that of a man who came to a people saying, ‘I have seen the enemies’ armies with my own eyes. I am just a warner, so run away.’ Thereupon some of his people obeyed and left the place and thus could survive. Whereas the rest disobeyed and stood still until the enemy came at them and slaughtered them all. The former (group) is like those who obey me and follow my guidance, and the latter is like those who deny the truth and disobey me” (Al-Bukhari).
Nor can a soul die except by Allah's leave, the term being fixed as by writing. If any do desire a reward in this life, We shall give it to him; and if any do desire a reward in the Hereafter, We shall give it to him. And swiftly shall We reward those that (serve us with) gratitude.

The following is an abridged English translation of a sermon given in Malé, Maldives, by His Eminence Mullah Ilyas Hussain, Vice President of the Adalat Party which is in coalition with the President of the Republic Mr Mohamed Nasheed.

Youth, please pay attention! There will be rivers of wine and honey in Heaven. Heaven-dwellers are divided into 100 ranks. Aspire for the highest rank which is Firdous because God’s throne itself sits over it.
Wine is prohibited in this life. But because it is legal [in Heaven], the wine of Heaven does not leave you with nausea, trips to the toilet, intoxication or even headaches.
There will be comfortable couches, which can be adjusted, couches made of gold and precious stones. And young lads of infinite beauty will come to you with cups of wine taken from streams. They are eternally youthful and like golden pearls.
You can get any fruit you want and however much you want to consume. Birds, fried and put on trays — they come and present themselves for you to eat.
God gave this commandment to you from Seven Heavens above: to aspire for Heaven.
Whatever you want, you will be given. You will all be guests of God.
If you are not satisfied, there’s only room for relaxing there. There will be Houris (‘black-eyed beautiful Virgins’) protected like golden pearls. Please calm down a bit, beloved sisters! What is a Houri made of? Three things: the bottom part is made of musk, the middle part is made of ambergris, and the upper part is made of Camphor. Their hair and eyebrows are black in color, they are as beautiful as rubies and coral.
Wine taken, fruits eaten and your heart is content, then you are given a Houri — calming on the eyes, content for the heart, and relaxing to the body.

In Heaven, no idle sounds will be heard, no noises will be heard that will lead you to become a criminal, only Peace will be heard.
Please calm down from now, beloved Sisters. Don’t ask me questions. You may ask: For you Houris; what for us? Now listen to what God has to say: You will be recreated anew. How will you be resurrected in Heaven? As virgins. Not satisfied still? God says further: You will be recreated as wives made to love their husbands, of same age, having no chance of aging ever.
What is Kaub? It is something that is erected. Forgive me but this is going to be a technical discussion. Kaaba (House of God in Mecca) is also called that because it is erected from the ground. The shin is also called Kaub because it grows straight out of the legs. Just like that, women in their full prime will have their may-mathi (breasts) pointing out.
They will have the same age. What age? Heaven-dwellers will enter there in the prime of their beauty: 33 years of age. 33 years is the age at which youth reaches prime. You will be eternally 33 years of age in Heaven; whether a 100 years pass or so you will still be 33 eternally. Height? 60 ‘muh’ (‘muh’ in Dhivehi is equal to 18 inches), in Adam’s image, everyone will be, there will be no one old.

So what’s the story about the wives we have on Earth? They will be many times more beautiful than a Houri. So no questions there. If you pray the five obligatory daily prayers, and fast when you are obliged to fast, and are faithful and obedient to your husband, there will be eight gates open at Paradise, so please enter from the gate of your choosing. More beautiful than Houris.
Then there will arise the question of jealousy. But in the Afterlife there are no such issues for God has said that he will get rid of the jealous streak in your heart. Then they will reside on the couches, one being considerate towards the other, and they will live on peacefully as if siblings. There will be no jealousy. No petty conflicts. There will be no issues rising among second, third or fourth wife, as you experience in this world. You only get to enter Heaven only after being cleansed of such inconveniences. In Heaven there will be only satisfaction and happiness and there will be nothing that troubles the heart. God is Great. That is Heaven.
Now let’s take a look at shopping in Heaven. But wait a minute, now youth will be wondering about this: what about going to the toilet after eating and drinking? Beloved brothers, there will be no toilet in Heaven. Why is that? A water will be given and after you drink it, a kind of bloat will leave through the mouth. It will smell like musk, no bad smell at all. It won’t be a Paradise of Blessings if we have to go to the toilet over and over again.

When you go shopping in Heaven, there will be no need for money or any need to actually buy anything. There will be no money in Heaven. They will go shopping every Friday. Why? To buy anything? No, to roam around for the heart’s content. A breeze from the north of Heaven will affect their faces and their clothes, and extra beauty will be added to them. When they return with such added beauty, their house-folk will say to them: “Every day your beauty increases.”
There will be no hospital. There will be no falling ill — ever. There will be no death — only living for Eternity. No ageing but eternal sustenance of youth.
Are you happy, Heaven-dwellers? What more do we need? Should I give you something more noble? What is better than this? God has said that today I am bestowing my approval and from today onwards will never resent my followers. Do you have a difficulty in seeing the Full Moon? Any difficulty in seeing the sun on a cloudless sky? Just like that you will see God through the naked eye. That will be the greatest gift you get in Heaven than this — seeing God’s self in his full glory.
Let’s see about the last one who gets to enter Paradise. He will walk, he will crawl, he will be surrounded by fire (as he comes out of Hell). The person who is in the least ranks of Heaven-dwellers will have in service 80,000 servants, 82 women, 100 people’s strength and after intercourse, (she) will always be re-virginised.

This is a gift I bring to those who desire heaven. We have a short time. We have only this Earthly temporary life to correct and through this key we get to enter Heaven and once we enter, there is no boredom and no difficulties. So use your youth to work towards this.
If you want to live your life’s days according to God’s way, you must lower your gaze, control what you hear with the ear, keep in check the actions committed by your hands and feet; do not say a sorry word at your brothers-in-faith and not raise a weapon against him; your tongue has to be kept in check. The tongue is soft and small but most people get to enter Hell due to misuse of the tongue. A person’s undoing is misuse of his tongue and private parts. A person who has protected these two parts are ensured a place in Heaven. Two angels will write every word you utter; you will be given a balance sheet of the actions you committed. If you want Heaven’s wine, give up Earth’s wine. You will get clothes made from silk.
Those who cut off blood relations, why be petty and jealous and give up Eternal Happiness? Compete and try to excel towards that. Why do we lose ourselves in temporary Earthly pleasures? This is a prison; this is the Unbeliever’s Paradise. We need to wake ourselves up for Dawn prayer. We have to make our children pray before they go to school in the morning.

I really do not understand how can a person with even a cursory knowledge and exposure of human nature criticize this aspect of reward, mentioned in the Qur'an. The Qur'an has simply stated that in the life hereafter, man shall be granted all these things that he very strongly desires to possess in the life of this world and due to which, many a times, he is driven away from the path of his Lord's liking.
A study of human history as well as that of contemporary societies shall clearly evidence the fact that one of the strongest attractions that has led man away from God and His directives is that of the opposite sex. Many a times, man has sinned because of this impulse. The Qur'an has simply assured man that if, in the life of this world, man would control himself within the boundaries prescribed by the Shari`ah, his Lord in His infinite mercy shall grant him all that he desired to get but from which he refrained himself, only to deserve the mercy and good will of His Lord.

This is excellent news indeed. Masha-Allah, I am completely convinced even though, I have to admit, I am a bit concerned about the anatomical composition of those houris. I mean ambergris is, after all, a discharge from the digestive system of the sperm whale; musk is a substance that comes from a gland close to the anus of a male deer and camphor is used to embalm the dead. The thought of cohabiting with maidens composed of substances associated with faecal discharges and the anus and smelling like a corpse is somewhat unsavoury. Nevertheless Allah (SWT), Rasool (PBUH) and you, venerable mullah, know best.
Dear mullah, you have told the sisters that their hymens will be rejuvenated over and over. By any chance are we brothers into such good fortune by having our foreskins restored?
I am eternally grateful that I will be able to go shopping, insha-Allah, on Fridays. That’s an absolute bonus. I mean the knowledge that the days of the week will still be intact in al-Firdous is a relief. Our good mullah, you overlooked telling us if we are going to have a two-day weekend or just the one day. Even with the strength of 100 men one may need some light relief from all that “activity” during the week on that couch.
I wonder why the breeze from the north of al-Firdous is going to be so pleasant. Perhaps this bit of news needs to be kept from the hapless Scots, Norwegians, Eskimos and the like. In the northern countries, as opposed to holy Arabia, a northerly breeze is usually very cold and so it may not be such a good idea to tell them about this.
Hang on, but there is even better news in the sermon of your eminence. Some of us are going to crawl out of the fire of al-Gehannam and still be rewarded with 80,000 servants and 82 women. So does that mean there is still some room for misdemeanour in this life?

Talking of pigs, dear mullah, I have one more question to ask- please forgive me- and perhaps you can tell us about this in your next sermon. I live in an infidel country, several hundred kilometres from a holy mosque, and see a lot of haram things being consumed. You have now given the good news that wine will become halal in al-Jannah. I am wondering if laham khinzeer, the meat of the dirty pig, will also become halal over there. It’s just the way some of these cursed kuffar eat a whopping-good bacon and egg breakfast, sitting at those roadside cafes, makes my mouth water sometimes. Wouldn’t a chalice of good al-halal cabernet sauvignon with a bacon and egg breakfast (al-halal, of course) be a great way to start off the day after a busy night on those kinky couches, sa-aadatul-mullah?
I fully take on board what you implored, venerable sir, when you said “your tongue has to be kept in check”. There is absolutely no risk of that not happening, for the organ in question is firmly lodged in my cheek.

As Muslims, we should not let our emotions get the better of us. It is certainly difficult for a person to look at the tragedies of the world today and not feel helpless and sad. But believers are called to put their trust in their Lord, and not to fall into despair or hopelessness. We must continue to do what Allah has called us to do: put our trust in Him, perform good deeds, and stand as witnesses for justice and truth.
"It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards East or West.
But it is righteousness to believe in Allah and the Last Day,
And the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers;
To spend of your substance, out of love for Him,
For your kin, for orphans, for the needy,
for the wayfarer, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves;
To be steadfast in prayer
And give in charity;
To fulfill the contracts which you have made;
And to be firm and patient, in pain and adversity
And throughout all periods of panic.
Such are the people of truth, the God-fearing.

Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that: Certain people of the Ansar asked the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and he gave them; then they again asked him and he gave them until all what he possessed was exhausted.
Then the Prophet (PBUH) said, "Whatever wealth I have, I will not withhold from you. Whosoever would be chaste and modest; Allah will keep him chaste and modest and whosoever would seek self-sufficiency, Allah will make him self-sufficient;
and whosoever would be patient, Allah will give him patience, and no one is granted a gift better and more comprehensive than patience".
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Allah shows compassion only to those among His slaves who are compassionate".

A Bedouin came to the Prophet and said, "Tell me of such a deed as will make me enter Paradise, if I do it." The Prophet (pbuh) said, "Worship Allah, and worship none along with Him, offer the (five) prescribed compulsory prayers perfectly, pay the compulsory Zakat, and fast the month of Ramadan." The Bedouin said, "By Him, in Whose Hands my life is, I will not do more than this." When he (the Bedouin) left,the Prophet said, "Whoever likes to see a man of Paradise, then he may look at this man."

It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The lowest of the people of Paradise in status will be a man whose face Allaah will turn away from the Fire towards Paradise, and make a shady tree appear before him. … Then he will enter his house and his two wives from among al-hoor al-‘iyn will enter after him. They will say: ‘Praise be to Allah Who has created you for us and us for you.’ And he will say: ‘No one has been given the like of that which I have been given.’” (Part of a long hadith, Muslim)
".........There will remain one man who will be facing the Hellfire and will say, “OH Lord! Its (Hell) vapor has poisoned and smoked me, and its flame has burnt me. Please turn my face away from the Fire.” He will keep on invoking Allah till Allah says, “Perhaps if I give you (what you want), you will ask for another thing?” The man will say, “No, by Your power, I will not ask You for anything else.”
Then Allah will turn his face away from the Fire. The man will say after that, “Oh Lord, bring me near the gate of Paradise.” Allah will say to him, “Didn’t you promise not to ask for anything else? Woe to you, oh son of Adam! How treacherous you are!” The man will keep invoking Allah till Allah will say, “But if I give you that, you may ask me for something else.” The man will say, “No, by Your power, I will not ask for anything else.” He will give Allah his covenant and promise not to ask for anything else after that. So Allah will bring him near to the gate of Paradise. When he sees what is in it, he will remain silent as long as Allah wills, and then he will say, “Oh Lord! Let me enter Paradise.” Allah will say, “Didn’t you promise that you would not ask ME for anything other than that? Woe to you, oh son of Adam! How treacherous you are!” On that, the man will say, “Oh Lord! Do not make me the most wretched of Your creation,” and will keep on invoking Allah till Allah will smile. When Allah smiles because of him, then HE will allow him to enter Paradise. When he enters Paradise, he will be addressed, “Wish from so and so” He will wish until all his wishes are fulfilled. Then Allah will say, “All this (what you have wished for) and as much again therewith are for you.” Abu Hurairah (RA) added, ‘That man will be the last of the people of Paradise to enter Paradise.”
'Ata (radiAllahu anhu) narrated while Abu Hurairah (radiAllahu anhu) reporting: “Abu Sa’eed (RA) was sitting in the company of Abu Hurairah (radiAllahu anhu) and he did not deny anything of his narration till he reached his saying, ‘All this and as much again therewith are for you.”
Then Abu Sa’eed (radiAllahu anhu) said, ‘I heard Allah’s Apostle say, “This is for you and ten times as much.” Abu Hurairah (radiAllahu anhu) said, “In my memory it is as much again therewith."(Part of a long hadith Sahih al-Bukhari)
Regarding your last questions, if you percieve God as us muslims do, then you will understand how easy it is for Almighty Allah to change that. The painful penetration can easily be changed into the most pleasurable penetration.
Futhermore Allah says in the quran which translates to:
“And We shall remove from their breasts any hatred or sense of injury (which they had, if at all, in the life of this world); rivers flowing under them, and they will say: ‘All the praises and thanks be to Allaah, Who has guided us to this, and never could we have found guidance, were it not that Allaah had guided us! Indeed, the Messengers of our Lord did come with the truth.’ And it will be cried out to them: ‘This is the Paradise which you have inherited for what you used to do’"(7:43)

Every saying of the holy prophet has a context. Every saying has a morale. Every saying has to be reserched, to do it justice....
Also, it is narrated that an old woman came to the Prophet Muhammad and made a request, “O’ Messenger of Allah make pray for me that Allah grants me entrance into Paradise.” The prophet replied, “O’ Mother, an old woman cannot enter Paradise.” That woman started crying and began to leave. The prophet then said, “Say to the woman that one will not enter in a state of old age, but Allah will make all the women of Paradise young virgins. Allah says, “Lo! We have created them a (new) creation and made them virgins, lovers, equal in age.” (Quran, verse 35-37).

He (the Bedouin) said: By Him in Whose Hand is my life, I will never add anything to it, nor will I decrease anything from it. When he (the Bedouin) turned his back, the Prophet (may peace be upon him) said: He who is pleased to see a man from the dwellers of Paradise should catch a glance at this man.
A bedouin came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and after accepting Islam expressed his wish to accompany him in the expedition.
The Prophet (Peace be upon him) asked some of his companions to take care of him and settle his needs. When the Muslims captured one of the forts and won a large booty, the man had taken out a herd of cattle for grazing.
The spoils were distributed among the combatants apportioning the Bedouin also of his share. When he was given his part, he took it to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and asked, "What is this?"
The Prophet (Peace be upon him) explained that it was his share of the booty of war, but he said, "I didn't come to you for it." Then pointing to his throat he continued, "I followed you hoping that I would be hit by an arrow, entitling me of Paradise."
The Prophet (Peace be upon him) replied, "If you desire it so, God will do likewise."
Then, in a subsequent battle at Khaybar the Bedouin was among those killed in the encounter. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) asked, "Is it the same man?" When the companions replied in the affirmative, the Prophet (Peace be upon him) remarked, "He was true to God and God made his wish come true." The Prophet (Peace be upon him) shrouded his corpse with his own mantle and recited the funeral service for him. Thereafter, he said, "O Allah, thy servant had come to migrate in Thy way and was killed for Thy sake. I bear witness to it."

The date palm tree
This is a good tree to which Allaah likened the word of Tawheed when it is established in the sincere heart, where it bears fruits of good deeds that strengthen eemaan (faith).
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): "See you not how Allaah sets forth a parable? – A goodly word is as a goodly tree, whose root is firmly fixed, and its branches (reach) to the sky (i.e., very high)." [Ibraaheem 14:24]
This is the tree to which Allaah likens the believer because it is good in all aspects, it is lasting and it offers different kinds of benefit. Ibn ‘Umar reported: "The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘There is a kind of tree whose leaves do not fall and it is like the Muslim. Tell me what it is.’ The people mentioned different kinds of desert trees … and I said to myself, ‘It is the date palm tree,’ but I felt too shy to speak up. Then the people said, ‘Tell us what it is, O Messenger of Allaah.’ He said: ‘It is the date palm tree.’" (al-Bukhaari, 60)
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Allah the Almighty said:
I am as My servant thinks I am. I am with him when he makes mention of Me. If he makes mention of Me to himself, I make mention of him to Myself; and if he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of him in an assembly better than it. And if he draws near to Me an arm’s length, I draw near to him a fathom’s length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed.

Medical aspects of forbidden "meat of the dirty pig"
The pig is a scavenger. It lives on muck, faeces and dirt. It is really really dirty.
According to medical research, the fat content in pork is more than any other meat (beef, mutton etc.) and it takes longer to digest. Dr. M Jaffer in an article in the Islamic Review (London) of January 1997 issue has listed 16 kinds of harmful germs, which have been discovered in pork in modern researches and the diseases, which could be caused by them. The number of patients suffering from tapeworm disease is the highest in the world among pork eating nations. Other diseases attributed to pigs are caused by tri-chinelia spirates and intestinal worms occupy first place among such nations too.
Dr. Glen Shepherd wrote the following on the dangers of eating pork in Washington Post (31 May 1952).
"One in six people in USA and Canada have germs in their muscles - trichinosis 8 from eating pork infected with trichina worms. Many people who are infected shows no symptoms. Most of those, who do have, recover slowly. Some die; some are reduced to permanent invalids. All were careless pork caters".
He continued "No one is immune from the disease and there is no cure. Neither antibiotics nor drugs or vaccines affect these tiny deadly worms. Preventing infection is the real answer."
And then there is the case of the all famous Not Swine flu, not pig flu lets call it H1N1, H1N2, H3N1, H3N2, and H2N3. we always hear in the news.
Pigs meat is haraam in islam, and the wisdom behind it is quite visible.
Allaah forbids whatever He wills in this world to its people, for He is the Creator and Sovereign of these things, so it is not permissible for anyone to object to the ruling of Allaah on the basis of his foolish thinking and imperfect understanding. The ruling and the decision of the matter, before and after, is only with Allaah, and there is none who can overturn His ruling, may He be glorified and exalted.
The rulings (ahkaam) of this world are not like the rulings of the Hereafter.
The wine of this world causes people to lose their minds, unlike the wine of the Hereafter which does not make people lose their minds or cause headaches.
Crystal-white, delicious to those who drink (thereof). Free from headiness; nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom.(Quran 36:46-47)
Narated By Abu Huraira : The Prophet said, "Allah said, "I have prepared for My righteous slaves (such excellent things) as no eye has ever seen, nor an ear has ever heard nor a human heart can ever think of.'"(Bukhari)
So as we can see paradise is something that is not of this world. So when the Quran talks about rivers of honey that does not mean that it is the same kind of honey that we have in this world. Similarly, when the Quran talks about rivers of wine in paradise that does not mean that it is the same kind of wine that we have here on earth that makes you get drunk and do stupid things and gives you a hangover the next morning. No, not at all. God is just using these terms in order for us to try to imagine what this paradise is kind of like. So the wine of paradise is nothing like the wine of this world.
Regarding the question will you be able to satisfy this strong urge of urs for the meat of "the dirty pig" let me assure you that if you live the life in this world as prescribed by Allah, Allah Almighty will mostly certainly reward you with what want in the hereafter, no doubt about it ;) but dont expect it to be the dirty meat thats available here its going to be perfected for you and presented to you without all the defects that we see it in this world today.

Freedom of speech, a necessity for progress and development? This is an assumption based upon Europe’s historical struggle against the Church that prevented progress and investigation. Muslims do not have the same historical baggage.
Muslims reject freedom of speech in its pure meaning. This is not due to a backward mentality or a stubborn opposition to all things Western. Freedom of speech means the unrestricted expression of oneself. This however does not exist, can not exist and should not be imagined to exist.
Looking at freedom of speech in Western secular states the same is also true. There are many restrictions; for example there are hate speech laws, defamation laws, libel laws etc. In reality people can express themselves within the context of the law, and not with unrestricted freedom.
Furthermore, when Islam and Muslims are attacked under the banner of freedom of speech, a contradiction is highlighted. There are laws in place to prevent offending religious minorities such as the Jews. Taking the Danish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad as an example, if the cartoons where of holocaust denial it would be against the law, or viewed as incisive. When it came to the Muslims it was a different story.
Muslims and the book of the Muslims, the Qur’an, encourage thinking and debate. This is reflected in our history and scholarship. However, abuse and unrestricted forms of expression creates hatred and discourages true dialogue. This is aptly put by the Qur’an itself:
“Invite to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful speech; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious. For your Lord knows best who have strayed from His Path and who receive guidance.”(Qur'an 16:25)
“And insult not those whom they (disbelievers) worship besides Allah, lest they insult Allah wrongfully without knowledge. Thus We have made fair-seeming to each people its own doings; then to their Lord is their return and He shall then inform them of all that they used to do.” (Qur'an 6:108)
Plutarch says about Lycurgas that to a man who demanded the establishment of democracy in Sparta, he replied: "Go thou and first establish democracy in thy household."

It is quite clear that this is extrapolating the meaning of these verses. It’s also clear that that there is the distortion of the true meaning to fit your thesis on freedom of speech per se.
In fact this form of license is used by many Muslims. This is seen by Bin Laden types, Some Mullah types and sometimes even the press. This is exactly what happened with Christians. Scripture was used for one’s own ends.
Sadly it’s a case of fitting a round hole with a square plug. It does not hold water.

Just to add here, when western nations look at so called Islamic societies and they see some perceived negative behaviours, they are very quick to blame the Islamic values as the cause. However when it comes to their immense problems in western societies they always add more legislation and turn a blind eye to the values underpinning their societies. It is as if they have been divinely revealed!

We must also ask what type of a society would emerge if people were granted the 'right' to insult, offend and ridicule each other, as a right in itself. For there is a difference between believing 'speak the truth and the truth may offend' and granting the right to offend per se.
Such attitudes erode the common social bonds that gel society by doing away with respect and working in mutual partnership, leading to anti social undercurrents and attitudes, all of which the west is now coincidently trying desperately to confront. How can a society claim to be civilised when it believes its ok to offend and ridicule en mass and then protect the culprits?

The point here is there is no "absolute" freedom of "speech", it doesnt exist, shouldnt exist.
The propagated values in western society are freedom and individualism. How can the overemphasis of my freedoms and the notion of my individuality - which are being forced down our throats via the political and economic structures in western society - actually create a cohesive society? With non-cohesive values you will get a non-cohesive society.

An islamic point of view
Al-Bukhaari (6018) and Muslim (47) narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever believes in Allaah and the Last Day, let him speak good or else keep silent…”
‘Not a word does he (or she) utter but there is a watcher by him ready (to record it)’(50:18)
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded us to control our tongues in more than one hadeeth, such as that narrated by al-Tirmidhi (2406) from ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Aamir who said: “I said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, what is salvation?’ He said, ‘Control your tongue, keep to your house and weep over your sin.’” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, 3331.
Al-Tirmidhi (2616) also narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to Mu’aadh, after teaching him some of the laws of Islam, “Shall I not tell you what is the foundation of all that?” I [Mu’aadh] said: “Of course, O Prophet of Allaah.” He took hold of his tongue and said, “Control this.” I said, “O Prophet of Allaah, will we be held responsible for what we say with it?” He said, “May your mother be bereft of you, O Mu’aadh! Will the people be thrown into Hell on their faces or on their noses for anything other than the harvest of their tongues?”
Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 2110.

The concern is if we are to borrow the western philosophy & their values into our society (which seems to be the trend now a days) we have to be convinced that its the right thing to do. We just cant expect it to be a divine revelation and apply them into our lives blindly. We have to compare and contrast. We have to examine their values and see its association with their progress. We have to identify their problems and examine the cause.
I am not suggesting we adopt to the western way of life but if we are doing it we need to examine it.

We see these wonderful texts offering many insights to this topic of freedom of expression.
The exhortation is addressed directly to the individual rather than to the state. The seriousness of things are laid out clearly, with the reminding us of watchers recording every word we utter.
What is expected of the individual is made clear – only to speak good. The failiure to take heed is made very clear elsewhere.
What's in need is to strive for a society imbibed in this type of Knowledge. Knowledge that starts with knowing Allah.
So the key is TO KNOW ALLAH. In other words to know THAT OUR LORD OUR GOD IS ONE AND TO LOVE OUR GOD WITH ALL OUR HEARTS & soul..
Once that is achieved. The rest would follow. So to deprive a person his/her freedom of expression as done in this world is really trying to take on oneself GOD’s rights. This is absurd. This is taking on PHAROH’S MENTALITY. Sadly we see much too much of this around us.

Ruling by that which Allaah has revealed is part of Tawheed al-Ruboobiyyah (Oneness of the divine Lordship), because it is implementing the ruling of Allaah as is implied by acceptance of His Lordship (Ruboobiyyah) and His perfect sovereignty and control. Hence Allaah calls those who are followed in a manner contrary to what He has revealed arbaab (lords) of their followers. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning)

Elections took place in Iran and the winner was President Ahmadinejad. But there were allegations of vote-rigging. Western governments were up in arms, issuing strongly worded statements in support of democracy in Iran. Yet Egyptian elections have been rigged regularly for many years and President Mubarak has taken office through rigged referendums, so why hasn't that provoked such anger? Fined €2,800 for insulting her, the extremist then went on a rampage, attacking Marwa and her husband with a knife. Marwa died on the spot.The murder of Marwa and the murder of Neda should be seen as crimes of equal barbarity and of equal impact. But the murder of the Egyptian woman in the hijab did not break Obama's heart and did not receive front-page coverage in the west. The murder of Neda incriminates the Iranian regime, whereas the murder of Marwa shows that terrorism is not confined to Arabs and Muslims – a white German terrorist kills an innocent women and tries to kill her husband simply because she is Muslim and wears a hijab. Compare this to the almost non-existent coverage on China’s daily oppression of Muslims in Xinxiang. At the same time as the 50th anniversary in Tibet was taking place the Chinese were clamping down heavily on Muslims involved in what they call "illegal religious activity”. A secretary with Hotan's Communist Party Propaganda Department confirmed that some illegal religious activity has been halted and illegal books, writings, computer discs and audio tapes had been confiscated. The only difference between Tibet and Xinxiang is that the opposition in Xinxiang is Islamic calling for Islamic ideas rather than western ideas.

A lot had been said in here about this and the conclusion we've reaced is that the west's freedom of speech is not that much progressive as they claim it to be, and there exists a better alternative in islam. Something much more practical and cohesive.

This response is dangerous, politically naive and is exactly what the non-Muslims want. It is a passive submission to the current status quo. They are expecting the Muslims to passively stand by and watch Islam relegated to Friday service, just like what happened to Christianity in the past.

Reacting violently without an Islamic authority and courts will not solve the problem or even implement what the Sharia demands. It is well known that there is a Sahih Hadith demanding that the one who insults the Prophet(saw) must have capital punishment enforced on them. But where are the courts? Where is the mechanism to do this? Commanding all that is good and forbidding all that is evil is an Islamic obligation but if we do not have the power to fully implement the punishment system of Islam, what do we do? Well, the Prophet(saw) told us, if we can’t change it with our hands then we change it with our tongues. Didn't the Prophet(saw) face abuse during his struggle in Mecca when he had no power? Did anyone respond with aggression or violence? The answer is no.

This response is also in line with classical scholarship as a Hanbali scholar, who summarised al-Ghazali's piece on "Commanding the Good and Forbidding the Evil", wrote that if the the prevention of a specific evil act caused more evil or fitna then the actions must be re-evaluated. What this essentially means is that sometimes speaking out is more powerful and more in line with the Islamic objectives then physically putting an end to it.
If Muslims are able to challenge the political philosophy and world view of these non-Muslims and show that the Islamic model is philosophically and practically superior, wouldn't this impact the global Muslim community in a positive way? Wouldn't Muslims rally behind the call for Islam? Wouldn't they feel motivated and energised to implement this beautiful way of life? Additionally, providing an effective intellectual challenge would stir public opinion and actually show that Islam is a positive alternative for Muslims and non-Muslims. This in turn would be a key milestone in showing how degrading and awful these expressions of speech are, and most significantly, it will highlight that the west and the east need their values changed to the Islamic values.

10 days since I read these words. 10 days I have read with amazement about sheik Illiyas’s speech to the youth, about freedom of speech and what not.
For me, your laboured post identified the central problem facing Maldivians and even the rest of the Muslim world. This being the failiure of implementing the Shariah in our lands. Put another way the failiure of most Maldivians and most Muslims in completely submitting themselves to Allah.
Having identified the problem you suggest the cause of this problem being the failiure of the elite in our society, including the religious scholars.
Having gone so far, I was waiting for the remedy either from you or the comments. The great preoccupation seems to be “freedom of speech”. Being unable to bear this paradox anymore I ask you and the many readers here.

How do you ask for applying Al-Shariah (Islamic Law) in your country when you don’t apply it to yourself or to your family? You don’t fear Allah when dealing with your family, you don’t help them follow the right path, you don’t care for feeding them from money that comes from good means (Halal) and by doing that you are among the people that Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) said about them “And you love wealth with inordinate love”. So, you lied, cheated and broke your oath and now what do you expect. A victory?
Start with yourself. Pray the mandatory, the 5 prayers in time. Pay Al-Zakat. Be kind to your parents. Try to get closer to Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) by praying Al-Sunnah. Take every chance to get closer to Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) even if it is trivial. Remember that a smile on your face is a sadaqah (charity). Don’t ask people to do anything that you yourself don’t apply. Don’t start asking for applying Al-Shariaah except when you are a good example in applying it at home and at work. Don’t run away from responsibility by blaming others. Change yourself first and then others will follow you. Be a good example wherever you go. If you spend your time blaming others, please stop doing it - Thanks a lot – May Allah reward you – For, there is already a lot of critics out there. Always start by changing yourself. After that ask Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) sincerely to give you victory and to aid all Muslims who followed the same path. This way you are among the ones that Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) mentioned in the Quran: “If you will aid (the cause of) Allah, He will aid you, and plant your feet firmly”(47:7).

On the surface of things I agree.
The Iranians are seen as they are because of their own doing. Taking an embassy hostage dragging on for months. Sending almost 1 million young men to death as waves and waves of cannon fodder in the Iran-Iraq war. Their blood letting in their religious customs. They even deny the holocaust. There is cruelty, unfairness, backwardness in Shariah. Shariah refuses to admit modern methods of litigation and evidence gathering. There is the subjugation of women & the unfairness of sentences passed against women by male judges – as witnessed in countries with this form of law. The shariah law belongs only in the arid Arabian deserts of 14 centuries ago and not in modern world. It is archaic, barbaric, unjust and has not been ever successfully applied in any country in over a millenium. It is incompatible with modern times and is definitely incompatible with our culture and country.
Now you decide if it is good or bad ,,,, as you put “ Is it really that bad?”

What do you people, Muslims say to Sh. Fareeds assertion that girls should not go to school. That women were made for mans pleasure and that she should stay at home and cater to men. Surely you do not agree to this. Do you see why the Shariah is not fit for these times.
In the previous post in this blog we've discussed about womens right to education. Its an obligation for all muslims to acquire knowledge. I'm certainly not aware that Sh Fareed made such a claim, even if he did, it certain goes against the islamic principles and the islamic shariah.

Sex and The City 2 is beyond awful - it gives Western women a bad name
You may be wondering why it has required two contributors to write an article condemning Sex and the City 2 as possibly the most racist, sexist and offensive piece of cinematic trash produced in the last decade. This has been necessary due to the fact that only one writer was able to sit through the whole film and did not feel she could fully convey her fury without the aid of another – one who had repeatedly left the film in disgust and napped intermittently for its duration.
We are both free-thinking, intelligent young women who went into Sex and the City with pretty low expectations; merely the desire for a couple of hours of escapism and over-the-top fashion. Neither of us are easily offended – in fact we tend to be fairly offensive ourselves. In fact, one of us cites Jeremy Clarkson, the most politically incorrect man on the planet, as her comedy idol. Yet Sex and the City 2 achieved such a high level of racial insensitivity and bigotry rarely witnessed in contemporary culture that even we were left squirming. Michael Patrick King, the film’s director, should be Clarkson’s new muse, so efficiently has he managed to offend both men and women from virtually every corner of the globe.
The film appears as though it has been written by kids on work experience. Racist kids on work experience. The one-liners veer between the disgustingly vulgar and the downright unfunny – for instance, in the middle of the desert Samantha shrieks: ‘Lawrence of my labia!’ Disgusting because the woman now looks like a badly preserved corpse, and incredibly offensive given their environment. Throughout their trip to ‘Abu Dhabi’ – the film was in fact made in Morocco, because shockingly, the values of the makers of Sex and the City coincided very little with those of the Arab Emirate states – the women sublimely embody the stereotypical ‘ugly American’ abroad, offending everyone within earshot.
There are ‘hilarious’ references to ‘The Real Housewives of Abu Dhabi’, mocking observations about the difficulties of eating in a niqab, and a satirical gem in the creativeness of a ‘burkini’.
The women waltz carelessly through the Middle East, figuratively raping every cultural sensitivity they encounter along the way. Presumably, the writers are attempting to satirise the oppression of women by some Muslim traditions, but they are in fact too stupid to make a valid satirical point and end up merely offending.
Any attempt at making a valid point about the lives of Muslim women backfired and managed to spectacularly offend not only followers of Islam, but also British and American audiences who are tainted by association with these crass and vulgar stereotypes.
The film steadily buries its audience under a suffocating mountain of sexism, racism and decadence until it can take no more. One cannot comprehend why the actors of Asian descent who signed up to play the male servants were so willing to be involved in a production which so brutally belittles their heritage and reinforces every racist stereotype already regrettably in existence.
We could also comment on the homophobia, the rampant excesses of the lives of the four women which no longer bear any relation to reality and the reduction of women to shoe-obsessed, tactless harpies, but to address those issues would turn this into an entire essay.
It is sufficient to state that if this is the picture that some Middle Eastern countries are given of Western society, one can almost understand the motivations of Muslim extremists.
By the time we left, we would have greeted the demise of these insensitive, idiotic characters with applause and can only pray that Sex and the City 2 will never be the image by which Western women are judged by those in the Middle East.

A very interesting prophecy relates to the moon landing (which occurred in 1969), is it possible The Quran predicted this? Well, judge for yourself by considering the following information – Chapter 54 of The Quran is entitled “The Moon” and starts right away by giving us news about the splitting of the moon as a sign that the end of the world is drawing close.
“The moon has split and the hour has drawn closer” (The Quran, 54:1)
When did the prophecy come to pass?
To answer that, one must keep the prophecy in mind: “The moon has split.” This is a metaphor. Parts of the moon have left its surface. They no longer are part of the moon. So, the prophecy does not refer to the landing on the moon or to the first step made by Neil Armstrong but to the fact that Armstrong and Aldrin collected 21 kilograms of lunar rocks to bring back to earth. The prophecy was fulfilled at the very moment the astronauts left the moon in the lunar module containing 21 kilograms of rocks that had belonged to the moon. This can be confirmed by checking the definition of “split” in any dictionary, among the definitions given by Dictionary.com are – “to divide, disunite, separate”
The date this prophecy came to pass was on July 21 1969. The moment the prophecy was fulfilled is confirmed by the hour of departure of the lunar module, which left the lunar surface at 17:54:1 (Universal Time) or 1:54:1 (EDT) and as you have seen above, verse [54:1] is the verse that deals with the prophecy.
Still not convinced? Lets read the following verses after (54:1) –
“The moon has split and the hour has drawn closer. Then they saw a great miracle; but they turned away and said, “Old magic.” They disbelieved, followed their opinions, and adhered to their old traditions.” (The Quran, from 54:1 to 54:3)
Here, the author of The Quran specifically states – “the moon has split”, then people will see “a great miracle”, yet they still “disbelieved”. Could the “great miracle” be the fulfilment of prophecy?
