Rabi' al-awwal 12th. - Just Another Day? - Reflections!

Today is the Birthday of the Prophet Muhammad – Pbuh. I was moved to remember the phenomenal events that continued to astonish the Contemporians of the Prophet from his birth until his death again in Rabbial Awwal 12th - 63 years later; almost on a daily basis. These events recorded in much detail by eyewitness accounts and its transmission subjected to the most rigorous literary and historical quality control ever undertaken by man, brings this life of a true servant of Allah in all its happy moments and tragic moments vividly to our attention - in sharp focus. [1]

He presented to the people of his time the Holy Koran, as the ultimate miraculous proof of his prophethood. Further down in this post is a beautiful examination of this aspect of the Koran written by a brother, and I share his thoughts with you. [2]

About the Prophet –Pbuh the Koran says …

*{You have indeed in the Messenger of Allah a beautiful pattern (of conduct) for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day, and who engages much in the Praise of Allah.}* (Al-Ahzab 33:21) [3]

This being as it is, is it any wonder that many people had wonderful things to say of the final Messenger of Allah? Here below are but a few of the reactions to reading of this truly wonderful life. May Allah Bless His noble Prophet. May Allah increase the love we have for Allah & His Prophet –Pbuh in our hearts. [4]

1. The British philosopher, Thomas Carlyle, who won the Nobel Prize for his book ‘The Heroes’ wrote: “It is a great shame for any one to listen to the accusation that Islaam is a lie and that Muhammad was a fabricator and a deceiver. We saw that he remained steadfast upon his principles, with firm determination; kind and generous, compassionate, pious, virtuous, with real manhood, hardworking and sincere. Besides all these qualities, he was lenient with others, tolerant, kind, cheerful and praiseworthy and perhaps he would joke and tease his companions. He was just, truthful, smart, pure, magnanimous and present-minded; his face was radiant as if he had lights within him to illuminate the darkest of nights; he was a great man by nature who was not educated in a school nor nurtured by a teacher as he was not in need of any of this.” [5]

2. George Bernard Shaw, the British playwright said: “The world is in dire need of a man with the mind of Muhammad; religious people in the Middle Ages, due to their ignorance and prejudice, had pictured him in a very dark way as they used to consider him the enemy of Christianity. But after looking into the story of this man I found it to be an amazing and a miraculous one, and I came to the conclusion that he was never an enemy of Christianity, and must be called instead the savior of humanity. In my opinion, if he was to be given control over the world today, he would solve our problems and secure the peace and happiness which the world is longing for.”[6]

3. J.W.H. Stab wrote in ‘Islam and its Founder ’ : “ Judged by the smallness of the means at his disposal, and the extent and permanence of the work that he accomplished, no name in world's history shines with a more specious luster than that of the Prophet of Makkah. To the impulse, which he gave, numberless dynasties have owed their existence, fair cities and stately palaces and temples have arisen, and wide provinces became obedient to the Faith. And beyond all this, his words have governed the belief of generations, been accepted as their rule of life, and their certain guide to the world to come. At a thousand shrines the voices of the faithful invoke blessings on him, whom they esteem the very Prophet of God, the seal of the Apostles… Judged by the standards to human renown, the glory of what mortal can compare with his?” [7]

4. Dr. Gustav Weil writes in ‘History of the Islamic Peoples ’: “Muhammad was a shining example to his people. His character was pure and stainless. His house, his dress, his food - they were characterized by a rare simplicity. So unpretentious was he that he would receive from his companions no special mark of reverence, nor would he accept any service from his slave which he could do for himself. He was accessible to all and at all times. He visited the sick and was full of sympathy for all. Unlimited was his benevolence and generosity as also was his anxious care for the welfare of the community.” [8]

5. Alphonse de La Martaine wrote in ‘Historie de la Turquie’: "If greatness of purpose, smallness of means, and astonishing results are the three criteria of a human genius, who could dare compare any great man in history with Muhammad? The most famous men created arms, laws, and empires only. They founded, if anything at all, no more than material powers which often crumbled away before their eyes. This man moved not only armies, legislations, empires, peoples, dynasties, but millions of men in one-third of the then inhabited world; and more than that, he moved the altars, the gods, the religions, the ideas, the beliefs and the souls. Philosopher, Orator, Apostle, Legislator, Conqueror of Ideas, Restorer of Rational beliefs... The founder of twenty terrestrial empires and of one spiritual empire -- that is Muhammad. As regards all standards by which human greatness may be measured, we may well ask, is there any man greater than he?” [9]

6. Michael Hart , author of ‘The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History’ said: "My choice of Muhammad to lead the list of the world's most influential persons may surprise some readers and may be questioned by others, but he was the only man in history who was supremely successful on both the religious and secular level.” [10]

7. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the German writer said: “Us, Europeans, with all our concepts could not reach what Muhammad has reached, and no one will be able to precede him. I have looked in the history of humanity for an example and found that it was Muhammad, as the truth must be revealed. Indeed, Muhammad succeeded to subdue the entire world to monotheism”. [11]

Finally Allah orders us regarding the Prophet –Pbuh …

*{And whatsoever the Messenger gives you, take it. And whatsoever he forbids, abstain (from it). And keep your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is stern in reprisal}* (Al-Hashr 59:7) [12]

Indeed, one of the major problems with the Bible as it stands today is that the current Bibles force us to study ancient Hebrew and Aramaic scriptures through Greek and Latin glasses as seen by people who are neither Jews, Greeks, nor Romans. [13]

Such practices (as demonstrated in the book " What did Jesus really say?"), have seriously handicapped any attempts to faithfully translate the original author's intended meanings. [14]

This problem, all thanks be to the Almighty, has been completely avoided in the Qur'an, since it has remained from the time of its inspiration to the present day in the same language it was originally revealed in, the language has remained a living language from that day to this, and the book itself has always been in the hands of the people and not "the elite." [15]

The foremost miracle of the Qur'an is in its text. The text of the Arabic language! You cannot translate a miracle no matter how you may try. The Arabic language cannot be compared to any other language in its intricate complexity, diversity of form, richness of meaning, brevity of parlance, beauty of construct and power of delivery. To give an example of this let us look at the most basic of measures, that of dictionaries: [16]

A fairly comprehensive and authoritative reference on the English language would be the "Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary" tenth edition, in 1500 pages. On the other hand, a common Arabic dictionary is "Lisan Al-Arab" in 18 volumes, each averaging about 650 pages, or about 11700 pages in all. [17]

In other words, even if we were to disregard all of the other aspects of the Arabic language, such as its grammar, we would still be faced with a language, which is about eight times as complex as the English language. It is not at all uncommon in the Arabic language to find over one hundred words that refer to the same entity, each one of them giving a slightly different detailed description than all of the others. This has resulted in a language, which can translate complete English sentences into only one Arabic word. [18]

But the Arabic language is not simply a list of words. Far from it, it is a very complex collection of literary sciences which have been developed, refined, and fine-tuned for generations and millennia beyond counting. The end result of this is a group of literary sciences which literally have no parallel whatsoever in the English language, such as the science of "Sarf" or the multifarious sciences of "Balaghah," among others. [19]

Even when the English language can lay claim to a parallel science to that of the Arabic language, such as for example the science of "grammar," even in this case anyone who has the slightest understanding of the Arabic language finds that even these equivalent sciences fade nearly into oblivion when faced with the tremendous complexities and inestimable attention to the minutest detail in Arabic grammar which can literally reverse the meanings of a sentence simply by changing a single squiggle (diacritic) above the last letter of only one word in that sentence (Imagine being able to reverse the meaning of an English sentence by removing the dot over one "i" in that sentence). [20]

William Shakespeare was considered to be one of the leading masters of English literature known to date. However, he never had to deal with the Arabic language. Now, taking into consideration that the Arab nation was one obsessed with literary perfection and refinement of prose, it becomes apparent that what we had here was a nation of literally hundreds of "William Shakespeares."[21]

Indeed an individual's mastery of the Arabic language was considered one of the primary distinguishing criteria in selecting tribal leaders. Just as in the wild west people used to have public shoot-outs at high noon, so too did the ancient Arabs have public face-downs in literary composition. [22]

These public confrontations could at times be so scathing and destructive as to totally destroy a given individual or tribe and cause them to disband in shame and humiliation, erased from the pages of history (such as happened with the tribe of "Numair"). [23]

The greatest of these literary masters had their compositions transcribed and hung up on the walls of the noble Kaaba as a badge of honor and an example for future generations. These compositions which were regarded the "best of the best" where given the name of "Al-Muallaqat" (the hanging poems). [24]

These were the people whom God sent Muhammad (pbuh) to, and these are the people whom prophet Muhammad (pbuh) repeatedly challenged, over 23 years, to produce a work similar to the Qur'an, standing alone with no tribe to support him and no ally to defend him but God Almighty. [25]

In other words he was challenging them in a field, which they were the world’s foremost authorities in, and the source of their greatest strength and pride. Indeed all of God's prophets throughout history have been sent with miracles in the very fields, which that prophet's people excelled in so that they might fully comprehend the magnitude of that miracle and have no excuse in ignorance. [26]

These people whom prophet Muhammad (pbuh) stood alone against and challenged to face the Qur'an were no timid sheep. They were men of great pride, misdirected as it may have been, who would rather go to war and die a slow and torturous death rather than allow the slightest indignity to be attached to their names or the most trivial challenge go unanswered. [27]

These were people who would go to war at the drop of a hat or the slightest disrespectful word. In spite of all that, when prophet Muhammad (pbuh) brought them the word of God in the noble Qur'an they suddenly fell silent and refused to face its challenge. [28]

God continued to reduce the challenge to them, from challenging them to produce a book like the Qur'an, to challenging them to produce a single surah (chapter) like it, to finally challenging them to produce even a few verses like it. And still, no one was able to face the challenge. [29]

On the contrary, those who were the best versed in these issues were among the first to convert to Islam and accept God's message. Some of them even went so far as to completely give up altogether on their previous literary work and to publicly declare that faced with the utter perfection and completion of this book that there was nothing left to say and nothing left to compose. Perfection had already been achieved . Taken from brother Mishaal ibn Abdullah. Please include him in your prayers. May Allah Bless the Prophet – Pbuh, his family, his companions & All Muslims. [30].

In Conclusion, We saw that Allah Himself has described Prophet Muhammad -Pbuh as the best role model for us to follow. Allah and His angels send praises upon him, and He commands us to do the same:

*{Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet: O you who believe! Call for Divine blessings on him and salute him with a becoming salutation.}*
(Al-Ahzab 33:56) [31]

Please correct me when I err. Allah Knows Best,

Peace! [32]

For every positive court you quote there are literal hundreds that are negatives. To balance this article why did you not put some of those? I can put some. Why no pictures? To see a subject is worth a million words. Can any readers help?

@ Hilmy.
You are corect.

Surat 5, from verse 3-

,,,,,,,,,,,This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. ,,,,,,,,,,,

Is it not - After perfection, anything added = innovation ? Anything removed = innovation?

There are only 2 days of celebrations. The 2 Eids. I think the sister has that to learn. dear sister is building her own downfall. I remind her that if wants to engage this manner go to madrassa? Seeking attention is vice.

Narrated Anas:

I served the Prophet for ten years, and he never said to me, "Uf" (a minor harsh word denoting impatience) and never blamed me by saying, "Why did you do so or why didn't you do so?"

Thanx nice postage. What a blessing.

Narrates Abu Hurayra:

"O Allah's Apostle! Who is more entitled to be treated with the best companionship by me?" The Prophet said, "Your mother." The man said. "Who is next?" The Prophet said, "Your mother." The man further said, "Who is next?" The Prophet said, "Your mother." The man asked for the fourth time, "Who is next?" The Prophet said, "Your father. "

“The Europeans had left no stone unturned in distorting the facts and disfiguring Islam. They have painted Islam as the religion of the brutes and savages having no sense of wisdom, sagacity, virtue and righteousness. Now I was firm and confident that Islamic teachings are flawless and free of all contradictions, defects, drawbacks, and shortcomings. My studies, observations and discussions have led me to believe that Islam is free from the weaknesses of other religions and the defects which we see in the Muslims are not the defects of Islam.”

"Just Another Day?

There is nothing in the Qur’aan to say that we should celebrate the Mawlid or birthday of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). The Prophet himself (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not do this or command anyone to do it, either during his lifetime or after his death. Indeed, he told them not to exaggerate about him as the Christians had exaggerated about Jesus (upon whom be peace). He said: “Do not exaggerate about me as the Christians exaggerated about the son of Maryam. I am only a slave, so say, ‘The slave of Allaah and His Messenger.’” (Reported by al-Bukhaari). What has been reported is that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) made the day of his birth a day of worship, which is different to celebration. He was asked about fasting on Mondays, and he said: “That is the day on which I was born and the day on which I was entrusted with the Mission or when I was first given Revelation.” (Reported by Muslim, al-Nisaa’i and Abu Dawood).

May Allah guide us all -Amin-

..ooOOoo..

On the authority of `Adi Ibn Hatim (ra), it is reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah reciting this Qur'anic verse:

" They have taken their rabbis and their monks as lords beside Allah and [they take as a lord] Al-Maseeh, `Eesaa, the son of Maryam, yet they were not commanded but to worship One God: None has the right to be worshipped but He - Praise and Glory to Him: [Far is He] from having the partners they associate [withHim]" (Qur'an 9:31)

"...and I said to him : "We don't worship them." He said: "Do they not forbid what Allah has permitted and do you not then forbid it (to yourselves), and do they not make permissible for you what Allah has forbidden, and do you not then make it permissible (to yourselves)?" I replied: "Certainly!" He said: "That is worshipping them." (Narrated by At-Tirmizi, who graded it as Hasan)

`Adi Ibn Hatim informs us in this Hadith, that when he heard the Prophet reciting Allah's Words:

" They have taken their rabbis and their monks as lords beside Allah. And [they take as their lord] Al-Maseeh, `Eesaa, the son of Maryam" (Qur'an 9:31)

He contradicted the Prophet , saying that they do not worship them; for to his mind, what was meant by worship was bowing, prostration, supplication, sacrifice etc. But the Prophet informed him that their obedience to the rabbbis and monks in forbidding the permissible and permitting the forbidden was a form of worship, because they have thus made their rabbis and monks partners to Allah in obedience and in ordaining the Law.

Just another day?
Yes and no. Not a day of Festival on par with the 2 Muslim Festivals – Hadj and Ramzan; thats for sure. We must not imitate the Christians, Buddhissts and others. Thats for sure. A day to remember Allah’s Grace just like any other day. Thats for sure.

“ Do I have any special days?” Like son/daughters birthday? Fathers/mothers death anniversary? Day of convocation? Last day of exam? Driving test day? So….. ?
With these in mind what will the sister say? Of course not as a scholar :-)) but a human being?

Say (O Mohammad, peace and blessings upon him) “O mankind!, verily I am sent to you all as the messenger of Allah, to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. None has the right to be worshiped but he. It is he who gives life and causes death. So believe in Allah and his messenger, the prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e. Mohammad, peace and blessings upon him), who believes in Allah and his words, and follow him so that you may be guided.” Al-'Araf: 158.

the prophet (peace and blessings upon him) said: “Every innovation is misguidance.”

Al-Nasa'i reported another narration: “Every misguidance is in hellfire”,

if celebrating his birthday (peace and blessings upon him) was one of the things liked by Allah and his messenger, then it would have been permissible, and if it was permissible, then it would have been preserved, as Allah has ensured preserving his rulings, and if it was preserved, the guided caliphs, the companions, their followers and those who followed wouldn’t have left it.

Since they haven't done anything of this, it has as a result become clear that this is not a part of the religion of Allah. Muslims in general are advised to avoid such things whose legality haven't been proved neither by the Qur'an nor by the traditions of the messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him), nor in the deeds of the companions. Instead we would be well advised to pay attention to what is clear in the rulings as known obligatory and preferable deeds, and in this there is prudence.

What is clear in spite of all this is that the Prophet is Allah’s final Messenger. Allah instructs us to be respectful, loving and considerate on His Messenger. As the ayat in this main post by the sister clearly states Allah asks mankind to call for Divine Blessings on His Prophet & instructs mankind to salute him with a becoming salutation. This is not restricted to just this one day his birthday but the whole year round. Indeed in this is much to reflect on. Also we have to see that Allah judges not by appearances but what are in peoples heart.

Lets surely not forget that any action is Judged by Allah by only its intention. Allah looks into hearts and not appearances.

This is a Q&A on islam online.

As Salamu `alaykum. Does celebrating the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) have any evidence from the Qur'an and Sunnah? www.Sunnidawateislami.Com has answered that question in their question-answer column saying that it is allowed to celebrate the Prophet's birthday, the Qur`an has approved it and there is evidence from it in the Sunnah. When I discuss this matter with my family, I tell them it is bid`ah or an innovation. Am I right? I'd like you to please clarify this matter to me. I'd also like to know the correct date of birth of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the date he died.

Wa`alykum As-salaamu wa Rahmatul Allahi wa Barakaatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah , and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear questioner, first of all, we'd like to voice our appreciation for the great confidence you repose in us. Our utmost wish is to have our efforts come up to your expectation. May Allah help us all keep firm on the straight path, Amen!

It is permissible to celebrate the Prophet's birthday as an expression of love to the Prophet provided that the celebration doesn’t involve any of the prohibited acts.

In this regard, we would like to cite for you the following fatwa issued by Sheikh `Atiyyah Saqr, former head of Al-Azhar Fatwa Committee, in which he states the following:
According to historians, the Fatimides were the first to celebrate the Prophet's birthday. Qalqashandi, in his book Subh Al-A`sha, says that the Fatimides used to make a huge celebration in Egypt and distribute large amounts of sweets for the occasion. Actually, the Fatimides used to celebrate the birthdays of other members of the Prophet's family and they also celebrated Christ's birthday.

However, all of these celebrations were stopped in 488 upon an order from Caliph Al-Musta`li billah appointed as prime minister Al-Afdal Shahindah, son of Commander-in-chief Badr Al-Jamali, a powerful man who conformed to the Sunnah as stated by Ibn Al-Atheer in his book Al-Kamel, volume 8, page 302.

People stopped celebrating such occasions till Al-Ma'mun Al-Bata'ihi came to power and issued an official decree in 517 enjoining the distribution of alms in 12th Rabee` Al-Awwal. Sanaa' Al-Malik was in charge of distributing them.

When the Ayoubides came to power, they stopped all Fatimide practices, but families used to celebrate the Prophet's birthday in their houses. Then it returned to be officially celebrated at the beginning of the seventh century in the city of Irbil upon a decree from its prince, Muzafar Al-Deen Abi Sa`d Kawakbri Ibn Zein Ed-Deen `Ali- Ibn Tabakatikin, who was a Sunni.

Muzafar gave great care and attention to such celebrations and ordered marquis to be erected starting from the beginning of Safar. Such tents, which were wonderfully decorated and extended from Al-Qal`a gate till the Khandaq gate. Muzafar used to go everyday after `Asr prayer to watch the festivities in these tents.

The celebration was sometimes held on the 8th of Rabee` Al-Awwal (and sometimes on the 12th) which used to be an official holiday so that the people could enjoy the festival. Two days before the actual celebration, Muzafar used to order the sheep, cows and camels to be slaughtered in the main avenue amidst cheerful festivities, then the meat would be cooked and distributed among the people.

Ibn Al-Hajj Abu `Abdullah Al-`Abdari says that such festivals were widespread in Egypt during his rein and condemned the innovations that used to take place during such festivals. (Al-Madkhal, volume 2, p 11, 12)

Many books were written on the Prophet's birthday in the seventh century such as the stories of Ibn Dahya, who died in Egypt in 633 AH, Muhy Ed-Deen Ibn Al-`Arabi, who died in Damascus in 683 AH, Ibn Taghrabik, who died in Egypt in 670 AH; and Ahmad Al-`Azli and his son Muhammad, who died in Sabata in 670 AH.

Due to the spread of innovation during such celebrations, scholars have denounced them and stated that they were groundless. Among those scholars is the Maliki jurist Taaj Ad-Deen `Umar Ibn Al-Lakhmi Al-Sakandari known as Al-Fakahani, who died in 731 AH; he wrote his thesis Al-Mawrid fil Kalam `Ala-Mawlid on this issue and As-Suyuti quotes it in his book Husn Al-Maqsid.

Sheikh Muhammad Fadl `Ashur says that in the ninth century, scholars were divided over the issue. Some said it was permissible, others said it was not and it was recommended by As-Suyuti, Ibn Hajar Al-`Asqalani and Ibn Hajar Al-Haythmi, yet they condemned the innovations that took place during such festivities. Their opinion was derived from the verse: (And remind them of the days of Allah) (Ibrahim 14: 5).

Explaining the previous verse, An-Nasa`i and `Abdullah Ibn Ahmad report in Zaway’d Al-Musnad and Al-Bayhaqi in Shu'ab Al-Iman reports on the authority of Ibn Ka`b that he said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), said: 'The days of Allah' are Allah's Blessings and Signs, and the Prophet's birth is a great bliss." (Al-Alusi's Ruh Al-Ma`ani)

Muslim reports on the authority of Qatadah Al-Ansari that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), was asked about fasting on Monday and he replied: "It is the day on which I was born and on which I received the Divine Revelation". It is also reported on the authority of Ibn `Abbas and Ibn Jabir that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was born in the "year of the elephant" on the 12th of Rabee` Al-Awwal. He also received the Divine Revelation, ascended to the Heavens, migrated to Madinah and died on the 12th of Rabee` Al-Awwal.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), says that the day he was born was a special day. Since it is well known from the Shari`ah that Muslims should seize the opportunity in blessed days and do good deeds, Muslims should celebrate the Prophet's birthday so as to thank Allah for guiding them to Islam through Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

Therefore, celebrating the Prophet's birthday is permissible provided that it does not include committing any of the prohibited things. As for throwing banquets, this comes under the verse saying: (O ye who believe! Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you, and render thanks to Allah if it is (indeed) He whom ye worship.‏) (Al-Baqarah 2: 172)

My opinion is that celebrating such a religious occasion is recommended especially nowadays for youth have become forgetful of these religious occasions and their significance because they have indulged in other celebrations.

Celebrating such a great event should be done through reading more about the Prophet's Sunnah and life, building mosques, religious institutes and doing other forms of charity work that remind people of the Prophet's life and his struggle.

Therefore, it is permissible to celebrate the Prophet's birthday as an expression of our love to him and our endeavor to follow him as an example provided that these celebrations do not involve any of the prohibited things. Some prohibited things are improper intermingling between men and women, behaving improperly at mosques and partaking in innovations such as worshiping at tombs and other things that violate the teachings of Islam. If such previously mentioned violations surpass the religious benefit realized from these celebrations, then they should be stopped in order to prevent harm and wrongdoing as indicated in the Shari`ah.
Moreover, Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, adds:
We all know that the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not celebrate the Prophet's birthday, Hijrah or the Battle of Badr, because they witnessed such events during the lifetime of the Prophet who always remained in their hearts and minds.

Sa`d ibn Abi Waqqas said that they were keen on telling their children the stories of the Prophet's battles just as they were keen on teaching them the Qur'an. Therefore, they used to remind their children of what happened during the Prophet's lifetime so they did not need to hold such celebrations. However, the following generations began to forget such a glorious history and its significance. So such celebrations were held as a means of reviving great events and the values that we can learn from them.

Unfortunately, such celebrations include some innovations when they should actually be made to remind people of the Prophet's life and his call. Actually, celebrating the Prophet's birthday means celebrating the birth of Islam. Such an occasion is meant to remind people of how the Prophet lived.

Allah Almighty says: (Verily in the Messenger of Allah ye have a good example for him who looketh unto Allah and the last Day, and remembereth Allah much.) (Al-Ahzab 33: 21)

By celebrating the Prophet's Hijrah, we should teach people values such as sacrifice, the sacrifice of the Companions, the sacrifice of `Ali who slept in the Prophet's place on the night of the Hijrah, the sacrifice of Asma' as she ascended the Mountain of Thawr. We should teach them to plan the way the Prophet planned for his Hijrah, and how to trust in Allah as the Prophet did when Abu Bakr told him: We could be seen so easily, the Prophet replied saying: "O Abu Bakr! What do you think of two when Allah is their third?" (Have no fear, for Allah is with us.) (At-Tawbah 9: 40)

We need all these lessons and such celebrations are a revival of these lessons and values. I think that these celebrations, if done in the proper way, will serve a great purpose, getting Muslims closer to the teachings of Islam and to the Prophet's Sunnah and life.

As for celebrating `Ashura’, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), celebrated this day by fasting only. He asked the Jews why they fasted on that day and they told him that it was the day that Allah saved Moses and the people of Israel. The Prophet replied saying: "We have more of a right to Moses than you." So he fasted on that day and ordered the people to fast on that day. He also said near the end of his life: "By Allah, if I lived longer I would fast on the 9th of Muharram." That is, that he would fast on the 9th and the 10th in order to be different from the Jews who fast on the 10th only. However, some of the Sunnis celebrate `Ashura as if it were a feast. The Shi`ah consider it a day of sadness and mourning, but all such things are innovations and are completely un-Islamic.

As for the second part of the question, the exact date of the Prophet's birth is controversial, but it is most likely to be on Monday, 9th Rabee` Al-Awwal (20th or 22nd of April, 571 AC), the same year in which the invasion of the Elephants took place against the Ka`bah. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away on Monday 12, Rabee` Al-Awwal in the eleventh year of Hijrah (8 June 632 AC.)

Sister this is extraordinary. Very good that all sides of a question are allowed. This is a serious matter and its good that readers are seeing it so. Together Muslims are discussing and the aim is to please Allah swt. Its not the job of one brother/sis to judge another bro/sis. Its our duty to bring to each other the verses and hadis and opinions. We are doing it here. May Allah bless all bro/sis taking part. Allah bless you sister Jasmine.

AL imaran : 102 and 103.

The Prophet PBUH said: “None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child and all of mankind.”
(Bukhari and Muslim)

Once, Umar Ibn Khattab, made a statement to Allah's Messenger: “O Messenger of Allah! You are more beloved to me than anything except my own self.” Allah's Messenger (pbuh) remarked saying: “No, by the One in Whose Hand is my soul, not until I am more beloved to you than your own soul.” Umar then declared his love for the Messenger (PBUH) saying: “By Allah, now you are more beloved to me them my own soul.” Prophet (PBUH) then informed him that he had the complete and correct faith.”
(Sahih Bukhari)

The Prophet PBUH said: “Do not exaggerate about me as the Christians exaggerated about the son of Maryam. I am only a slave, so say, ‘The slave of Alaah and His Messenger.’”
(Reported by al-Bukhari).

The Prophet's birthday is an invaluable opportunity for Muslims young and old to partake in a celebration of joy and mercy; a celebration that recounts the compassion of the Prophet Muhammad and invigorates dampened spirits.

It serves as a reminder that whatever trials and tribulations one faces, the Prophet of God faced greater trials and tribulations, yet he never once allowed anger or hatred to determine his actions. Rather, he insisted: "love for humanity what you love for yourself."

you have been writing very nice and great articles, you need to study on this matter as the scholars agree that 12th is the day the prophet died and the day he was born is not clear its known to be on 570AD and its a Monday. it was never celebrated on his time no by his companions.

may Allah bless you and guide you, aimen

I agree with you whole heartedly. The Prophet was not born in Rab. Awl 12th. The scholars as you are say are categorical about that and only blind people like Jasmine & CO MUGS would go and ignore indisputable facts. She starts her long ramblings with the assertion of a historical fallacy – The birthday of the 12th RA. – A LIE!

This is a religion whose followers are in denial. They cannot even agree on the birth date of their Prophet. YET THEY WOULD HAVE PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT THEY GOT ALL THE OTHER DATES ALL CORRECT – Bollocks!.

Leave alone the birthday which they don’t know – as their own scholars admit, for centuries the majority of them have been perpetuating a pious fraud about the date of the birth of the “Greatest Prophet” and “the mercy unto mankind”. How transparently similar to the Buddha & Jesus followers whose birthday nobody knows. If you cannot get the birth correct, how can you be so sure you have got any other date correct? How can you be so sure that you have got any other detail correct? THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES on any of the details of the Prophet. Read the many comments here and you realize that one thing that stands out is that they haven’t got such a basic thing as the birthday of their hero correct.

Does logic tell you that when you don’t know the birthday right you can get the following right.

1. The STORY of the first revelation in that Cave.
2. His childhood with his wet nurse, about the splitting open breats etc.
3. His suppose to be miracles from his birth to death.
4. All these stories about how to Pray, fast, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc :-))))
5. The stories about their deaths
6. The tall stories of the war details

NOTHING and I mean NOTHING is certain! This has been demonstrated by scholar after scholar. The book on Apostates by the Doctor brothers highlights this once gain.

If a great man is living amongst you, you have been living with him, if he was the extra ordinary miracle maker he is supposed to be, then wont you be talking about that man? Wont you be discussing about this man? Wont you be telling your children about that man? Wont you make sure that you learn about that man? In todays world Sai Babna is supposed to be such a marvelous man. His devotees learn about that god-man. They know everything to know about him. FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING YOU HOLD SACRED HIS BIRTHDAY IS KNOWN. The fact that you mugs have not even his birthdate shows what a feeble castle in the air you poor simple people have constructed

The fact that you losers don’t even know the birthday of your Prophet shows that you mugs have been taken for a huge ride. All these stories are nothing but pious stories with the object of those who manufactured them to get an ego trip by getting lamblike human beings like YOU to follow their spittoon filled lectures. Cattle! Heard mentality!

You nuts want us to believe that when you DON’T EVEN HAVE THE damn birth-date of your hero, you have all the details to his suckling, his early child hood, his marriage, his interactions from birth to 40 years when he was an anonymous goodie-goodie like any other goodie-goodie, details of his marriages, details how he ate, drank, had sex, all well catalogued, and even his death. Fibs!

PIOUS LIES! – FOR THOSE WHO WANTS TO SWITCH OFF THEIR BRAINS. Open your eyes! Your hero does not have a bithday! What possibly could you mugs have?

PIOS TAILS!

From Deen, we learn that for any deed to be accepted and rewarded by Allah (swt), there are two pre-requisites:

(a) the Intention (Niyah) should be purely for the pleasure of Allah (swt)

(b) the act should be in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet (saw) i.e. the Messenger (saw) must have done it/instructed about it/approved of it.

Any deed which does not find example in the Sunnah is an innovation - an invented thing. Very simply, it was not part of Deen at the time of the Prophet (saw), neither did his companions engage it in afterwards. However, in whatever way, a new thing found its way into the Deen and became an innovation in Deen.

Where do we find the root to celebrating, the Mawlid of Nabi (saw)? "Fatimides", so is it part of the Deen or is it an innovation?

May Allah guide us all -Amin-

Note:fasting on Mondays and celebrating the Rabi-al-awwal 12th are 2 different things, the former action can be traced back to prophet Mohammed's (saw) Sunnah.

@ 2.32

No doubt is there – It is innovation. Be honest, how much of innovations have you in your daily lives from switching on the lamp, to using the Loo? To wearing your T-shirt, Jeans? In legally it is Bi’ddah. When Caliph instituted the 20 rakats for Tharaweeh prayers what did he call it? Bi’ddah. So where are we?

No! I wouldn’t consider deleting this comment. On the contrary I would leave this poor example of “good manners” as it is - to demonstrate to everyone who visits this blog what is manifestly apparent – your very poor manners and intolerance. As Muslims we have been instructed by our Prophet by Allah’s Grace how to conduct oneself. We are not permitted to use inappropriate language however excited we become. We are made aware the dangers of the “tongue”.

Your comment is to me Gross and in very poor taste, and really deserves no further comment.

As Muslims we do not call people names. The only reason why this comment is not deleted is to show people what sort of behaviour we as Muslims should shun. I think in this regard your comment is eminently demonstrative. I also wish to high light the weaknesses of basing ones life and conduct on ones whims and fancies as you demonstrate here as a secularist and perhaps an atheist.

The issues you evoke here is in actual fact no big deal. It’s really a question of varying opinions. Allah Knows best. Allah is the Judge. I do not pretend to be so Knowledgeable as to be so foolish as to sit “in judgement” over my brothers and sisters. I was created only to worship Allah. In everything I do I must strive to think and adore Allah and ONLY Allah. Allah alone is Judge. Please try to understand that Darwin!

Anything and everything that makes me aware of Allah, turn to Allah in Obedience, reflect on His majesty and become more aware of my daily, monthly and yearly duties as taught by the Prophet towards my Creator without any intermediaries I Insha Allah would pursue with all the strength Allah Gives me.

Out of varying opinions is born the concept of tolerance. Variance could itself be a blessing. In rigidity is difficulty and Allah does not over tax His slaves. One thing is for certain Prophet Muhammad –Pbuh was born on this earth. He lived on this earth from the day he was born until he died. He received revelation from Allah and chosen as Allah’s Messenger one day. He went out on Hijra one day. He died one day.

Every single day of the year is a day to reflect on Allah – His Majesty, His Omnipotence, His Justice, His Mercy and His Love. Taking the case of Allah’s slave Prophet Muhammad – Pbuh, we love the Prophet, respect him, only because Allah chose him and instructed us through his Prophet to love His prophet more than our parents and even our own selves. We understand and never ever Insha Allah would forget that the excellence of the Prophet is that Granted by Allah’s Grace and Will for He made the Prophet the most self effacing SLAVE OF ALLAH. In his “slaveness” to Allah lies the Greatness of Allah’s slave.

Muslims have ONLY two Eids as taught by the Prophet. On this there cannot be any disagreement. The limits that Allah set for mankind is clear. And the most prominent of those limits are that WE DO NOT SET ANY PARTNERS TO ALLAH.

…. Laā ‘ilāha ‘illallāh Muhammadur-rasūlullāh.

Allah Knows Best. Please correct me when I'm wrong, and O brothers and Sisters lets pray that Allah Guides us all.

Amin.

Examples of what scholars of past said. Compare & Contrast ....

Acquire knowledge because doing so is good. Seeking it is worship. Reviewing it is glorifying Allah. Researching it is jihad. Teaching it to the ignorant is charity. Serving the scholars is a way of drawing near to Allah because knowledge is the path of ascension to the stations of Paradise. It is a companion in isolation and a comrade in distant lands. It speaks to you in solitude. It is a guide to prosperity and a shield against adversity. It beautifies one among friends and is a weapon against enemies. With it Allah elevates people and makes them guides and bellwethers of good. The scholars are people whose words are sought and whose actions are imitated. The angels long for the scholar’s company and comfort them with their wings. Everything, the fish of the sea, the beasts of the earth, the predators of the land and sea, and the cattle pray that blessings come upon him.

This is because knowledge enlivens the heart against ignorance, illuminates the eyes against darkness, and strengthens the body. It transports the servants to the mansions of the select and the righteous and to the highest ranks in the world and in the Hereafter. Contemplating it is equivalent to fasting, and reviewing it is equivalent to the Night Prayer vigil. With it, kinship is united and the lawful is distinguished from the unlawful. Knowledge is an imam which leads to righteous actions. It is craved by the people destined for Paradise and shunned by people destined for Hell.

Warathatu’l-Anbiya’; Imam Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali

It is reported from Abu Hurayrah – Allah be pleased with him – that he said:

Shall I not point you to comfortable proceeds? People responded, “And what is that o Abu Hurayrah?” He replied, “Fasting in winter.”

It is reported from ‘Umar – Allah be pleased with him – that he said:

Happy Birthday, Prophet Mohammed!.

I know, I should draw some more, but right now, I'm way too zonked on a combo of Black Opium, peanut butter, blueberry jam and coffee to even think about it (kids please do not try this at home.). As the haabees run around breaking their well-guarded "no birthday celebrations!, its a western culture shit!" rule; I'll sit back here in my fortress and laugh at the ensuing hilariousness.

Wish he could see the crapfest Islam has become now. I'm positive he'll ask the archangel Gabriel (Jibreel for you sand nigger puritians) to smash us up with a pair of subsea mountains. The "ending clip" would be hilarious, I'm sure. Replays of "sadoom" and shit.

Foooooo to all this activity here. The tide in this country is well in favour of relegating celebrating the Prophets Birthday as some Pagan custom by the ‘bees. Its clear to all that this blog is an attempt to establish a ‘bees breeding roost. Comment after comment attempts us to forget this day. This behaviour is very strange. Isn’t there anyone who remembers the good ole days in Maldives where we prayed, played and lived with God very much a part of our everyday lives? Importing this type of brand of Islam attempts to make what we are not – Arab ‘bees.

Its alright to celebrate birthdays, weddings, funerals, etc that we go doing but this is shirk? Can someone explain this? This is the 3rd. month. What about all the things you do in the 1st and 2nd months every day of your life? Have you heard anybody wanting to stop those hundreds of innovations? No. This is HYPOCRISY. I see in this signs of hidden enemity towards the Prophet.

In the previous post, an interesting exhange is developing between Yahya and Cathy /Marc. I pray Yahya, cathy & Marc does not mind me copying and pasting the last reply by Cathy/ Marc. I'm copying because it has value and it surprised me.

enjoy!

@ Yahya,

Our pleasure entirely. Good manners is becoming routine on this blog! Thats a welcome change. :-)

Its not God who is like that.
Its man who tries to be like God
and surely fails. BIG DIFFERENCE!!!

We cannot answer for Islamic views on that.

From a Believers perspective - In General God Judges everything according to perfect Justice in Perfect Love - Given that you are not born into Grace or has not accepted Grace in your life and above all Baptism we dont expect you to know this or understand the nuances in this.

How God does it with individual cases God knows and only those He reveals to like Christ & the Saints chosen by God. I can tell you those people who had not heard of God in a revealed sense, God would Judge them in Perfect Justice in perfect love!

How he does it, We dont know, and it does not bother us one bit how, when or where God does it. In short We have better things to expend our energies on rather than on trivialities and splitting hair for the sake of splitting hair. Once again since you are not in Grace we dont expect you to appreciate or even understand these nuances. Forgive us but after all nobody in his right senses would expect a baby to run a marathon.

What we do know is that perfect Justice would be done in perfect love - in every single case. Those people to whom God revealed as to HOW, they know it. Eg. Christ and the Chosen Saints.

As for anthropomorphism forgive me but you exagerate. Which human being in his right mind would accept 10$ instead of 1000,000? THAT IS NOT A HUMAN CHARECTERISTIC. Surely you can see the difference.

By the way we were rather amused that you did not fully understand the 10 & 1000,000 point. We certainly did not expect you to miss the bus altogether. Nevermind!

WE PRAY FOR YOU! KNOCK! AND SURELY THE DOORS WOULD BE OPENED.

If the first inward thought is not warded off,
it will generate a desire,
then the desire will generate a wish,
and the wish will generate an intention,
and the intention will generate the action,
and the action will result in ruin and divine wrath.
So evil must be cut off at its roots,
which is when it is simply a thought that crosses the mind,
from which all the other things follow on.

Muhammad trusted God completely, and accepted without question, the truth of what he heard. He knew that in conveying Gods revelations to others, he would encounter varying reactions. Yet he accepted it willingly, believing that God would give him the courage and determination to face every kind of opposition.

Who has had met a God-man? His representatives? His miracles? His devotees? If not the god-man himself, maybe his reps, his devotees? Have you heard od Sri Sai Baaba? His birth is surrounded by miracles attested to by hundreds. His childhood, youth and adulthood is full of miracles – attested, documented, sworn upon.

His miracles are feeding of thousands of the poor with one chapathi, walking in thin air, diving into great depths without air, being in many places simultaneously, snatching Seiko watches from thin air, producing holy ash from thin air, and of course bringing to life dead people – at least one.

I have seen just his picture and am always struck by his quite unusual afro cut. That’s his greatest miracle that has touched my senses. His devotees see him as the living God on Earth. For them, he answers their many prayers, intervenes in their daily lives in a million ways. This is Sri Saibaba. He is every where they say but you can visit him in Banglore.

Have you heard of the inimitable Sri Ravi Shankar Gee? A God man who has no claims it seems to divinity. His devotees never openly attest but their unspoken words scream – God Man! He I met. His Sudharshrini Kriya I have done. Thousands upon thousands have and continue benefiting from his Kriya. These hundreds of thousands have made Gee a Billionaire many times.

Big as life. Hard to ignore. What does Muslims here say?

Say not "Three" desist It will be better for you for Allah is one God Glory be to him Far exalted is he above having a son. To him belong all things in the heavens and the earth. How many angels were talking to Mary? When the Qur'an speaks about the announciation of the birth of Jesus to the virgin Mary, Sura 3:42,45 speaks about (several) angels while it is only one in Sura 19:17-21.

Isn't this the same type of apparent contradictions that many
Muslims talk finding in the Holy Bible?

I found many tales of brutality of Muhammad like this story:

Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 261:

Eight men of the tribe of 'Ukil came to the Prophet and then they found the climate of Medina unsuitable for them. So, they said, "O Allah's Apostle! Provide us with some milk." Allah's Apostle said, "I recommend that you sh ould join the herd of camels." So they went and drank the urine and the milk of the camels (as a medicine) till they became healthy and fat. Then they killed the shepherd and drove away the camels, and they became unbelievers after they were Muslims. When the Prophet was informed by a shouter for help, he sent some men in their pursuit, and before the sun rose high, they were brought, and he had their hands and feet cut off. Then he ordered for nails, which were heated and passed over their eyes, and they were left in the Harra (i.e. rocky land in Medina). They asked for water, and nobody provided them with water till they died.

And from Partial Translation of Sunan Abu-Dawud Book 38, Number 4339

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin:
The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) Said: The blood of a Muslim man who testifies that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Apostle should not lawfully be shed except only for one of three reasons: a man who committed fornication after marriage, in which case he should be stoned; one who goes forth to fight with Allah and His Apostle, in which case he should be killed or crucified or exiled from the land; or one who commits murder for which he is killed.

The more I read the more I questioned the sense of Justice of Muhammad. The following is very disturbing. I dare to say that any man who reads it and is not taken aback with disgust has a long way to go to become a human.

Sunan Abu-Dawud Book 38, Number 4348

Narrated Abdullah Ibn Abbas:
A blind man had a slave-mother who used to abuse the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) and disparage him. He forbade her but she did not stop. He rebuked her but she did not give up her habit. One night she began to slander the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) and abuse him. So he took a dagger, placed it on her belly, pressed it, and killed her. A child who came between her legs was smeared with the blood that was there. When the morning came, the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) was informed about it.
He assembled the people and said: I adjure by Allah the man who has done this action and I adjure him by my right to him that he should stand up. Jumping over the necks of the people and trembling the man stood up.
He sat before the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) and said: Apostle of Allah! I am her master; she used to abuse you and disparage you. I forbade her, but she did not stop, and I rebuked her, but she did not abandon her habit. I have two sons like pearls from her, and she was my companion. Last night she began to abuse and disparage you. So I took a dagger, put it on her belly and pressed it till I killed her.
Thereupon the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Oh be witness, no retaliation is payable for her blood.

I felt the above story was a manifest injustice. Muhammad condoned a man killing a pregnant mother and his own unborn child just because he said that she insulted the Prophet!

(Arabs used to sleep with their maid slaves. Quran perpetuates this tradition Q.33: 52 Muhammad himself slept with Mariyah the maid slave of Hafsa his wife without marrying her.)

Forgiving someone for killing another human being just because he said she insulted Muhammad is unacceptable. What if that man was lying to escape punishment? What does this story say about Muhammad's sense of Justice? During the past 1400 years, how many husbands escaped punishment for killing their innocent wives by accusing them of blaspheming the prophet of God and this Hadith made them get away with it?

Here is another one:
Sunan Abu-Dawud Book 38, Number 4349

Narrated Ali ibn AbuTalib:
A Jewess used to abuse the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) and disparage him. A man strangled her till she died. The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) declared that no recompense was payable for her blood.

It was not easy to read these stories and not be moved. There is no reason to believe that all these stories were fabricated. Why should believers, who have tried to depict their prophet as a compassionate man fabricate so many stories that would make him look like a ruthless tyrant?

I could no longer accept the brutal treatment of those who chose not to accept Islam. Faith is a personal matter. I could no more accept that the punishment of someone who criticizes any religion must be death.

See how Muhammad dealt with the unbelievers:

Sunan Abu-Dawud Book 38, Number 4359

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas:
The verse "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Apostle, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite side or exile from the land...most merciful" was revealed about polytheists. If any of them repents before they are arrested, it does not prevent from inflicting on him the prescribed punishment, which he deserves."

How could a messenger of God maim and crucify people on the account that they resist accepting him? Could such a person really be a messenger of God? Wasn't there a better man with more moral and ethical fortitude to bear this mighty responsibility?

I could not accept the fact that Muhammad slaughtered 900 Jews in one day, after he captured them in a raid that he started. I read the following story and I shivered:

Sunan Abu-Dawud Book 38, Number 4390

Narrated Atiyyah al-Qurazi:
I was among the captives of Banu Qurayzah. They (the Companions) examined us, and those who had begun to grow hair (pubes) were killed, and those who had not were not killed. I was among those who had not grown hair

Also, I found following story shocking:

Sunan Abu-Dawud Book 38, Number 4396

Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah:
A thief was brought to the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him). He said: Kill him. The people said: He has committed theft, Apostle of Allah! Then he said: Cut off his hand. So his (right) hand was cut off. He was brought a second time and he said: Kill him. The people said: He has committed theft, Apostle of Allah! Then he said: Cut off his foot.
So his (left) foot was cut off.
He was brought a third time and he said: Kill him.
The people said: He has committed theft, Apostle of Allah!
So he said: Cut off his hand. (So his (left) hand was cut off.)
He was brought a fourth time and he said: Kill him.
The people said: He has committed theft, Apostle of Allah!
So he said: Cut off his foot. So his (right) foot was cut off.
He was brought a fifth time and he said: Kill him.
So we took him away and killed him. We then dragged him and cast him into a well and threw stones over him.

Seems that Muhammad passed judgment before hearing the case. Also by cutting a thief's hand he is left with no other means to earn his bread except begging, which would be difficult since he is defamed as a thief and so hated by people. Therefore re-offending becomes his only means of livelihood.

Perhaps the greatest leader of all times was Mohammad, who combined all the three functions. To a lesser degree Moses did the same.

He brought his tidings to his people with a grand dignity sprung from the consciousness of his high office, together with a most sweet humility.

Mahatma Gandhi, statement published in 'Young India,'1924.
I wanted to know the best of the life of one who holds today an undisputed sway over the hearts of millions of mankind.... I became more than ever convinced that it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the Prophet the scrupulous regard for pledges, his intense devotion to his friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission. These and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every obstacle. When I closed the second volume (of the Prophet's biography), I was sorry there was not more for me to read of that great life.

It is impossible for anyone who studies the life and character of the great Prophet of Arabia, who knew how he taught and how he lived, to feel anything but reverence for that mighty Prophet, one of the great messengers of the Supreme. And although in what I put to you I shall say many things which may be familiar to many, yet I myself feel, whenever I reread them, a new way of admiration, a new sense of reverence for that mighty Arabian teacher.

Disdaining the penance and merit of a hermit, he observed without effort of vanity the abstemious diet of an Arab.

Narrated Anas ibn Malik: A group of people from the `Ukl (or `Uraina) tribe—but I think he said that they were from `Ukl—came to Madinah and (they became ill, so) the Prophet ordered them to go to the herd of (milch) camels and told them to go out and drink the camels’ urine and milk (as a medicine). So they went and drank it, and when they became healthy, they killed the camel herder and drove away the camels. This news reached the Prophet early in the morning, so he sent (some) men in their pursuit and they were captured and brought to the Prophet before midday. He ordered their hands and legs to be cut off and their eyes to be branded with heated iron pieces and they were thrown at Al-Harra, and when they asked for water to drink, they were not given water. (Abu Qilaba said, “Those were the people who committed theft and murder and reverted to disbelief after being believers (Muslims), and fought against Allah and His Apostle”). (Reported by Al-Bukhari)

It should be made clear that those people who came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were Muslims and they were sick. The Prophet advised them to go to the herd of camels and to drink their milk and urine (as a medicine). When they became healthy, they killed the herder of the Prophet and drove away all the camels that were allocated for sadaqah (charity).

When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to know about this, he applied the punishment for Hirabah on them.

Hiraba means killing people, robbing their money or raping women by an armed group of people. The punishment for Hirabah is mentioned in the Qur’an. Allah says: “The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His Messenger and strive after corruption in the land will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land. Such will be their degradation in the world, and in the Hereafter theirs will be an awful doom” (Al-Ma’idah: 33).

As for branding their eyes, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) branded the eyes of the people of `Ukl or `Uraina with iron because they killed the herder and branded his eyes with iron. Imam Ibn Hajar stated the differences of opinions among scholars and he said, “The killing that took place (that is, in reference to the above hadith) was in retaliation and Allah Almighty says, ‘And one who attacketh you, attack him in like manner as he attacked you’ (Al-Baqarah: 194).”

All in all, using this story as evidence in favor of the permissibility of torturing people in Islam is refuted by the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) applied the punishment for Hirabah on them and that he did not do so for personal vengeance.”

Prescribing urine as medicine, insane? Did you know?
Products such as tylenol, there is an ingredient called PREMARIN (PREgnant MARes' urINe). It seems this PREMARIN is extracted from horse urine and is most commonly in post menopausal women who have had a hysterectomy to treat hot flashes, and burning, itching, and dryness of the vagina and surrounding areas. It can also be used in conjunction with a progestin pill in women who have not had a hysterectomy. For women already taking the drug it can be used to treat osteoporosis.

It is a Form of Shirk to Perform a (Good) Deed for Worldly Reasons

Allah , says:

" To whomsever desires the life of this world and its glitter, We shall pay [the price of] their deeds therein - without decrease. They are those for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter except the Fire: Vain are their deeds therein" (Qur'an 11:15-16)

Allah , Most High, informs us in these verses that whoever performed a righteous deed in order to obtain some worldly benefit from it, such as one who fights in Allah's cause with the intention of acquiring a share of the spoils of war, Allah will reward him in this world with long life, good health and wealth etc, in accordance with his deeds and his desires; they will not suffer any loss, at least, in this world. However, in the Hereafter, they will be entitled to nothing, because they have already been rewarded in this life. And their deeds are without merit or value, since they did not perform them for Allah's sake.

Benefits Derived From This Verse

1. That Allah, Most High, may reward even the disbeliever for his deeds in this world, as He might reward the one who acts for worldly gain, but none of them will have anything in the Hereafter.

2. That shirk invalidates good deeds.

3. That seeking the life of this world invalidates one's good deeds in the Hereafter.

That every deed performed without the intention of pleasing Allah is invalid.

Relevance of These Verses to the Subject of the Chapter and to the Subject of Tawheed

That they prove that seeking the life of this world through righteous deeds invalidates their reward in the Hereafter.

Important Note

Seeking the life of this world through righteous deeds may be divided into three categories: (i) To perform deeds purely for Allah's sake, but with the hope that Allah will reward one for them in this life, such as the person who gives charity, hoping that Allah will protect him from loss - and this is prohibited; (ii) to perform deeds in order to be seen by the people (i.e. riyaa`) or to be heard by them (i.e. sum'ah) - and this is a form of shirk; (iii) To do good deeds in order to attain some material benefit from people, such as the one who accompanies the pilgrims to Hajj in order to receive payment for so doing, not for Allah's sake, or the one who seeks a reputaion for being pious and religious in order to make a living, or to obtain employment. As for the one who intends by his deeds only to achieve Allah's pleasure, but is granted some worldly reward by Allah , he is not guilty of any sin, but he will be considered to have received the reward of that deed in this world and his recompense in the Hereafter will be adjusted accordingly, as is the case with the one who fights in the way of Allah , and receives a share of the spoils.

Re : “I found many tales of brutality of Muhammad like this story” :-

The Prophet Muhammad –Pbuh was sent to mankind around the 6th Century. He was in Arabia. He came to make clear to mankind the limits within which mankind should operate. His actions under direct instructions from Allah set the boundaries, which were acceptable to Allah.

To understand this, picture a normal distribution curve. On the right and left you would have the extremes of that normal distribution, which are quantatatively the least relevant. The “bobby’s hat part/ inverted bell” of the curve quantatatively the most relevant would represent the least extreme by definition within the normal range or closest to the median.

It would appear Allah set his boundaries relevant to all possibilities. What are the limits on the severe side? What are the limits on the lenient side? What are the limits half way between the extremes? Thus the Prophet –Pbuh it would appear had no choice but to enact in practical terms all the limits. As a brother so beautifully pointed out he was no mere “tape-recorder”. He had no choice but to demonstrate and put into life God’s limits.

So the Prophet’s – Pbuh life was full of lessons demonstrating limits on severity, compassion, selflessness, love, sacrifice, companionship, friendship, enmity, happiness, sadness etc etc. In all this facets of life, Allah set the limits. Muslims are Muslims because they recognise that only Allah who knows everything, The Just, Who is the supreme King of Kings – Only Allah could set these limits. People like this Ibn Sina cannot be ‘Muslim” because they claim to be able to set limits, forgetting that they being human means that they are with very limited knowledge and flawed sense of Justice.

The choice in this case is obvious. Accept one who is All knowing, All Just, All Powerful as the Setter of Limits OR accept the deficient of Knowledge, Biased towards his ego, Powerless Ibn Sina as the setter of limits. Hilarious choice!

Getting back to the point; for each example of the prophet setting limits towards severity there are thousands of examples of the Prophet setting the limits towards compassion, love and brotherhood. No wonder scholars and any unbiased persons examining the life of the Prophet –Pbuh are shocked by the love, brotherliness, leniency, compassionateness, justice and truthfulness demonstrated by Allah’s Will, His Prophet –Pbuh. Of course, this is not “his actions” in relation to just the 6th Century Arabia but morality and goodness that’s supremely timeless. Subhanallahi! Ashadu anlaillaha Illalaahu Washadhu anna Muhamman rasoolulahi!

Eye for an eye! Tooth for a Tooth was the norm. With Islam the Prophet –Pbuh communicated a different norm, which was Eye for an Eye, Tooth for a Tooth but still better being forgiving “Gratis” for the sake of Allah - swt. The Prophet demonstrated this new norm, it being played out day in and day out over 23 years during his mission. His contemporaries were moved to unanimously say of him By Allah’s Grace & Will, “Mercy unto mankind”. A ringing verdict then! Seconded and reconfirmed by the testimonies of unanimously acclaimed great minds like Gandhi, Malcolm, Carlyle, and Shaw etc.

Maybe others more knowledgeable like brothers Thakuru, Yusuf, Verify, Daria, Hussain, Muiz would like to expand. The person who cut and pasted Ibn Sina’s pathetic bizarre logic is invited to think and once gain think! Allah knows best. Please correct me when wrong!

Peace!

P.S.
What was that all about? A Bush fan? More likely demonstrative of a puerile mind. Pathetic! May Allah Help him!

@ Hilmy

Peace! Brother Hilmy. May Allah Bless you brother hilmy. Your advice is not in vain.

Muslims are brothers/ sisters to one another. When one is hurt or in need of support a Muslim comes to ones aid. When there are misunderstandings a bro/ sis would strive to set things right. May Allah reward you in your strivings to work for unity, love and understanding between Muslims.

@ all

Its so important that we try to help each other. Bro/ sis please work hard and convince a bro/sis who is specialised in Islamic studies to join us and help us out when a scholars perspective could only increase our knowledge. As always thanks so much for all the beautiful Ayats and beautiful Hadis that has been shared here. The aim is to increase our love for Allah and make us come closer to Allah. It takes little to do some reading on Islam. Then share what we learn. Lets encourage each other to make a commitment to imitate the Prophet. Certainly the Prophet was sent by Allah, and we have been asked by Allah to follow him closely.

This way we would be better human beings full of love, humility, compassion, sagesse, hope and “slaveliness” – to Allah and only Allah.

Peace!

All stone is not diamond.....

As Doomsday draws near, men of religious post(scholars) will be more rotten, and more foul than rotten donkey flesh. (Hadith)

A good scholar is the best of mankind. The bad scholar is the worst of mankind. Men's happiness and disaster depend upon scholars. They do not leave any work for me to lead people astray." (Imaam Rabbani, Maktubaat)

It is authentically reported on the authority of Abu Hurairah (ra) that he said: "Allah's Messenger said:

"Perish the slave of the deenaar, the dirham, the khameesah1 and the khameelah.2 If he is given these things, he is pleased and if he is not, he is displeased. May such a person perish and be of the losers and if he is pierced with a thorn, may he not find anyone to remove it. Felicity (or, according to some scholars, a tree in Paradise) is for the one who holds the reins of his horse to strive in Allah's cause, with his hair unkempt and his feet covered with dust: If he is placed in the vanguard, he will be found in the vanguard and if he is placed in the rearguard, he will be found in the rearguard. If he asks for permission, it is not granted and if he intercedes, it is not accepted."

In this Hadith, the Messenger informs us that there are some people to whom the life of this world is all-important: It is all they know about and all they care about. Their first and last goals are wealth, luxury and ease. Such people will be destroyed and lost. The sign of these people is their absorption with all things material: When they are given something, they are pleased, but when they are not given it, they are angry. But there are other people who have no goal except Allah's Pleasure and the life of the Hereafter: Such people do not covet fame or glory; their only goal in life is obedience to Allah and His Messenger . The sign of such people as these is their simplicity and humility and their lowly position in society, so that whenever they request something from their leaders, they are refused, and whenever they intercede on behalf of another, their intercession is not accepted, but their final destination is Paradise and the best of rewards.

When the man who exerted himself in worship continued to see the other in sin, he would say: "Refrain from (sinning)." The sinner replied: "Leave me alone with my Lord. Have you been sent as a watchman over me?"

The man who tried to do his best then said: "I swear by Allah, Allah will not forgive you, nor will He admit you to Paradise."

How many angels visited Mary?

The first three verses (Aal-Imran(3:42-45)) do indeed use the word "angels." However, this plural form of the word is used to describe only one angel, specifically, angel Gabriel. This is a popular Arabic grammatical construct called "al-majaz al-mursal" which falls under the subheading of Arabic grammar titled "Balaghah". Suffice it to say that there are at least two quick clues to this matter which even non-Arabic speaking people can appreciate. The first one is that in the first set of verses, verses 46-48 say: "The angels said... Mary said... HE replied" meaning that we are speaking about an angel designated as "he" and not "they," in the same very verses themselves. In a football match, we may say that so-and-so scored the final goal, or we could say that such-and-such a team scored the final goal. It would not be a contradiction.

The scholars of tafseer in the past; al-Raazi said in his Tafseer, when commenting on the verse in Aal ‘Imraan: What is meant by the angels here is Jibreel alone. It is like the verse in which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “He sends down the angels with the Rooh (Revelation) of His Command to whom of His slaves He wills” [al-Nahl 16:2], meaning Jibreel.

There are many such examples in the Qur’aan, such as the verse in which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Those (i.e. believers) unto whom the people (hypocrites) said, “Verily, the people (pagans) have gathered against you (a great army), therefore, fear them.” But it (only) increased them in Faith, and they said: “Allaah (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us)” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:173].

What is meant by al-naas (the people) in the first case is Na’eem ibn Mas’ood, and in the second case is Abu Sufyaan and his companions. It does not mean all the people.

Imam Ibn ‘Atiyyah said in his tafseer al-Muharrar al-Wajeez: The word al-malaa’ikah (the angels) is used to refer to Jibreel because he is one of them, so the name of the race is used, as in the verse (interpretation of the meaning): “Those (i.e. believers) unto whom the people (hypocrites) said,” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:173].

Allah knows best and may Allah guide us -Amin-
